  • 2xEDGE steel staple wrapping around a 2x lumber board instead of piercing it. "Wrap around design."

Screws, nails and holes for rebar let water in.

2xEDGE surrounds lumber instead of going through it, so thereโ€™s less chance for water to penetrate and rot to set in.

You won't have to do this job again next year.

  • 2x lumber sitting on the soil line, held by a 2xEDGE staple. โ€œNo-dig, above ground install."

The worst edging job is digging a trench.

With 2xEDGE lumber sits on the soil, not in it - no trench needed. Plus, wood stays drier and can last longer.

You won't spend your weekend digging trenches or nursing your aching back.

  • 2xEDGE staple with two legs gripping a 2x board. "Two anchoring points, not one."

Edging thatโ€™s tipped over canโ€™t do its job.

2xEDGE holds lumber in place on 3 sides so  it's less likely to tip or lean.

You won't need to spend time on repairs or sweeping up mulch and gravel.

  • Scale comparison: 1-3/4" wide 2xEDGE staple beside a 3/4" landscape nail head.

Edging thatโ€™s not snug to the ground can shift.

2xEDGE is 1-3/4" wide - over twice as wide as a landscape nail head. That extra grip keeps shifting in check.

You wonโ€™t have a yard full of misaligned edging and crooked lines.

If you can use a mallet you can make wood edging.

"It took these two senior citizens no time at all and no physical stress." -Ellen

What you need for 2x lumber garden edging: 2xEDGE staples, 2x lumber (2x2 to 2x6), and a 16 oz rubber mallet.

What you need

Lumber and mallet not included with your staple purchase.

A steel hammer can dent the staples. A 16 ounce rubber mallet works perfectly.

Lumber size chart for garden edging: 2x2 for decorative paths and beds, 2x3 for containing gravel, 2x4 for all-around borders, 2x6 for containing maximum mulch and smothering grass and weeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many staples do I need?

There are two ways to figure out how many staples you need for your project. Bonus: get a lumber list, and project cost estimate, too.

  • Our staple calculator gives you a staple count based on the size of the lumber you plan to use.
  • Our project chooser gives you a staple count based on the shape and size of the bed you want to create.
What do I need besides the staples?

You'll need a 16 ounce rubber mallet and standard 2x lumber (2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x6). You can find both at home improvement and hardware stores.

Is lumber included?

No. 2xEDGE ships only the steel staples. You'll need to purchase standard 2x lumber (up to 2x6) separately. You can find it at lumber yards, hardware stores, and home improvement stores.

What is 2x lumber?

"2x" is the name for the 2-inch lumber sold at home improvement stores, hardware stores, and lumber yards. It's actually 1.5" thick. Depending on your location, cedar, redwood, pressure treated, and untreated pine or fir are typically available. We recommend lumber rated for ground contact.

Which lumber sizes work?

2xEDGE works with 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, and 2x6 of any length.

Can I use composite or recycled plastic lumber?

Yes, if it's true 2x sizing (1.5" thick). Not all composite lumber is sized this way, so check before you buy.

Will I need to cut my lumber?

Not if standard lengths work for you. 2x lumber comes in 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, and 20 ft. Need a different length? Cut it with a hand or power saw. Home improvement stores, hardware stores, and lumber yards often cut it for free or a small fee.

Will the staples rust?

Powder coated finishes are UV rated and resist corrosion. Rustic Steel is raw steel and develops a natural rust patina.

Will these work in hard soil?

Usually. 2xEDGE works in most soil. Dry, hard, or compacted soil (dry clay, caliche, desert hardpack) is tougher, and watering the area first can help. Before you buy, push a screwdriver 3 to 4 inches into the ground where your edging will go. Read our soil guide.

Can I remove the edging later?

Yes. Pull up your lumber and move it. No digging means no trenches left in your yard. No drilling means your lumber stays whole and reusable.

What if one part of my edging gets damaged?

Pull out the damaged board and swap in a new one. Each board is anchored on its own, so the rest of your edging stays put.

Is 2xEDGE sold in brick & mortar stores?

Currently 2xEDGE staples are only available to purchase online through 2xedge.com.
