FAQ

Installation and how-tos

What should I use to install my 2xEDGE?

Please check out "How to install 2xEDGE" for complete instructions.

What is the best type of lumber to use with my 2xEDGE?

2x4s come in many flavors. For many applications, pressure treated lumber (PTL) rated for ground contact is an inexpensive option that supplies long lasting performance. If you prefer to use materials that are not chemically treated, cedar is a terrific choice. You can also use untreated lumber and stain or paint it to suit your aesthetic and prolong its viability.

How many 2xEDGE landscape staples do I need?

The number of 2xEDGE staples you'll need to secure and stabilize your 2x4 will depend on the length of your 2x4 and your use-case. A good rule of thumb is that you'll need two 2xEDGE staples to secure a 6- to 10-foot long piece of 2x4 lumber to the ground. Install each 2xEDGE about 12- to 18-inches from each end of your 2x4 and you should be good to go. Two staples installed in this way will provide good support for holding landscaping material such as mulch, gravel, dirt, or rocks in place.

Please see "How Many 2xEDGEs Do I Need?" for project-specific info.

What are the actual dimensions of 2x4 lumber?

"2x4" is the nominal - not actual - dimension of 2x4 lumber. 2x4 lumber is actually 1.5-inches by 3.5-inches.

Can I use the 2xEdge with lumber larger than a 2x4?

2xEdge was designed to work with 2x4 lumber. It will not fit around wider lumber such as a 4x4 post or 7x9 railroad tie. Installing 2-by lumber that is taller than a 2x4 - the typical next size up is a 2x6 - will not allow enough of the 2xEDGE legs to penetrate the ground, reducing 2xEDGE's gripping ability. Using a 2xEDGE to install a 2x6 will likely mean your lumber will not stay put or supply a sturdy, long lasting edge.

Can I remove and re-use the 2xEdge?

Yes. Depending on the conditions of the ground you've installed 2xEDGE into, you may be able to pull your staples out by grabbing one end of your 2x4 and pulling it straight up in order to leverage the 2xEDGEs out of the ground. Or you may need to use a hammer claw, crowbar, etc., to pry up your 2x4 and remove your 2xEDGEs. However you are able to uninstall your 2xEDGEs, you should be able to re-use them.

About 2xEDGE staples

What is 2xEDGE made of?

2xEDGE is made of 16 gauge raw steel.

Can I paint or coat my 2xEDGE?

Yes, you can coat your 2xEDGE. A Google search on "coatings for raw steel" turns up many options.

My 2xEDGE arrived rusted - was that intentional?

While searching for (and not finding) something that could do what 2xEDGE does, we ran into a number of metal landscaping products like garden stakes, borders, and panels. The demand for rusted metal was off the charts. Some sellers offered "already rusted" merchandise, or included "rusted" as an option along with coated metal. Rusted metal in gardens and landscapes adds color, texture, and another natural dimension -- after all, rust is a naturally occurring reaction to metal's exposure to air and water.

Based on the overwhelming amount of pro-rust evidence we found around the Web, for the initial production run of 2xEDGE we opted to use raw steel. That means your 2xEDGE might arrive on your doorstep without rust, or with a little rust, and in time it will rust. If you like rust - you're set! Just install your 2xEDGE and let Mother Nature handle the rest. If you prefer that your 2xEDGE not be rusty, you can coat it. A Google search on "coatings for raw steel" turns up many options.

The feedback we receive on this inaugural batch of 2xEDGEs will help us to determine whether or not we need to offer coated options. So please leave feedback about your experience with this brand new product and include insights about your finish preference. We value your perspective and will use your feedback in our next iterations on the 2xEDGE concept.
