About 2xEDGE staples

What are 2xEDGE staples made of?

2xEDGE staples are made of 16 gauge raw steel.

How long do 2xEDGE staples take to rust?

2xEDGE staples are made of raw steel. That means they might arrive on your doorstep without rust, or with some rust. In time they will rust.

Depending on your environmental conditions (location, climate, air quality, etc.), your staples may rust very quickly, or they may take more time to fully develop a rust patina. The staples we've installed in the Midwest (high humidity in summer, snow in winter, lots of spring rain) have developed a full rust patina within 6 to 8 months of installation.

More info about 2xEDGE and rust is available on our site.

How long will 2xEDGE staples last

According to the steel fabricator that produces 2xEDGE staples, we can expect 2xEDGE staples to be viable and perform for many years, and likely last longer than the pressure treated lumber they support.

Depending on conditions, this can be decades. Assuming the worst conditions, we can expect the staples to perform as expected for at least 10-15 years.

More info about 2xEDGE and rust is available on our site.

Can I paint or coat my 2xEDGE?

Yes, you can coat your 2xEDGE. A Google search on "coatings for raw steel" or "how to protect raw steel" will turn up many options.

What size of two-by lumber do 2xEDGE staples work with?

2xEDGE staples have been tested with 2x3, 2x4, and 2x6 lumber. The staples are nine and a half inches (9.5") long and they fasten these types of lumber to the ground just great.

About installing 2xEDGE staples

How do I use 2xEDGE staples to install two-by lumber as landscape edging or garden borders?

Check out our "how to install" page for complete details about installing two-by lumber with 2xEDGE staples.

You can find all of our guides and plans on the Project Guides & Plans page. These include installation info and details about using 2xEDGE staples with different two-by lumber lengths.

What tools do I need to install 2xEDGE staples?

You can install 2xEDGE staples with just one tool - a rubber mallet. A 16 ounce rubber mallet works great for installation. Installing 2xEDGE with a regular hammer will likely dent and deform the top - or crown- of the staple. Using a rubber mallet will make 2xEDGE installation fast and easy, and the end result will be a snug fitting 2xEDGE with crisp, clean lines.

Check out our "how to install" page for complete details.

Depending on your project, other tools you might need include:

  • saw (hand saw, circular saw, miter saw, etc.)
  • speed square (to ensure your corners are set at the angle you desire)
  • tape measure
  • level
  • garden tools, e.g., garden trowel, rake, etc., for clearing the ground where you want to install your lumber

For the sake of personal safety, particularly if you are using power tools, you might consider:

  • safety goggles
  • hearing protection
  • gloves

How many 2xEDGE landscape staples do I need?

The number of 2xEDGE staples you'll need to secure and stabilize your two-by lumber will depend on the length of your lumber and your project. A good rule of thumb is that you'll need two 2xEDGE staples to install up to 10-feet of lumber. Install each 2xEDGE staple about 12-inches from each end of your lumber. Two staples installed in this way will keep your lumber perpendicular to the ground and provide good support for holding landscaping material such as mulch, gravel, dirt, or rocks in place.

Can I remove and re-use 2xEdge staples?

You should be able to pull your staples out of the ground by grabbing one end of your two-by lumber and pulling it straight up in order to leverage the staples out of the ground. As long as your staples weren't badly bent or twisted out of shape during installation, you should be able to re-use them.

About "two-by" lumber

What is two-by lumber?

The "two-by" in two-by lumber refers to the thickness of the lumber. Two-by lumber is 2-inches thick. Or it used to be 2-inches thick. The two-by lumber available today is actually 1.5-inches thick. Regardless, we call this 1.5-inch thick lumber two-by lumber.

The two-by moniker hails from the way the lumber is typically labeled. For example, a 2x4 stud, also called a two-by-four stud, is two-by (2x) lumber.

(By the way, 2xEDGE is pronounced two-by-edge.)

Two-by lumber is easy to find at hardware stores, lumber yards, and big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes.

What two-by lumber works with 2xEDGE staples?

2xEDGE staples will work with the following common two-by lumber widths:

  • 2x2 (two-inch by two-inch; actual: 1.5-inch x 1.5-inch)
  • 2x3 (two-inch by three inch; actual: 1.5-inch x 2.5-inch)
  • 2x4 (two-inch by four inch; actual: 1.5-inch x 3.5-inch)
  • 2x6 (two-inch by five inch; actual: 1.5-inch x 5.5-inch)

What is the best type of two-by lumber to use with 2xEDGE staples?

For many applications, pressure treated lumber (PTL) rated for ground contact is an inexpensive option that supplies long lasting performance. You can stain or paint PTL to suit your aesthetic.

If you prefer to use materials that are not chemically treated, cedar is a good choice.

You can also use untreated lumber and stain or paint it to suit your aesthetic and prolong the viability of untreated lumber.
