Installing edging along a sidewalk sounds simple until you're standing over the strip of soil between your sidewalk and the curb, wondering what actually can hold a wood border in place.

Four homeowners, all working with garden strips beside a sidewalk, used 2x4 lumber and 2xEDGE Staples instead of plastic, rubber, or metal strip edging. They each called their projects different things (a parkway strip, a curb-side bed, a flower bed running beside a concrete sidewalk). And they each skipped the shovel every time. 2xEDGE doesn't require digging a trench.

Here's how their projects turned out including the one problem almost everyone installing edging beside a concrete sidewalk runs into: concrete in places you don't expect it.

Hellstrip Edging: Two Seniors, 90 Minutes, No Digging

2x4 lumber sidewalk edging installed around a raised bed and street tree, Chicago front yard.

Ellen and David edged nearly 100 feet of sidewalk strip - or "hellstrip" - and added a couple of raised beds using pressure-treated 2x4s and 24 staples.

Start to finish the edging portion of the project took about 90 minutes to complete.

Their biggest obstacle wasn't the install; it was the concrete ledge hiding under the soil along part of the sidewalk. They solved it with one extra staple mid-board for stability under foot and paw traffic.

Ellen's got tips for tackling your hellstrip, captured in this customer interview.

Parking Strip Edging: Best on the Block, Front Steps to Curb

2x4 lumber sidewalk edging along a curbside flower bed, running toward a street tree.

Mollie and her household edged 100 feet of sidewalk strip plus a flower bed next to their front steps. Took about 3 hours, using 16 staples.

Uneven concrete forced them to shift the edging a couple of inches off the sidewalk in two spots. It's the suggested fix that they say took extra time but was worth it.

Verdict on their parking strip edging? "Definitely looks the best on the block."

Curbside Edging: The Fifth Edging Product She Tried (and the First One That Worked)

2x4 lumber curb edging along a tulip bed at the sidewalk's edge.

Gabi had already tried four other edging products before finding 2xEDGE.

She wanted something clean and minimal that didn't involve digging.

She edged 50 feet of curb strip with 11 staples in about 45 minutes, and hit the same concrete-under-soil issue as the other folks who tackled similar projects.

Nudging a board or two a half-inch solved it.

Flower Bed Edging Beside a Sidewalk: Free Lumber & a Little Help from a Little Helper

Stained 2x4 lumber edging along a flower bed beside the sidewalk, with a brick house and potted plants.

Shannon had replaced plastic edging around her sidewalk-side flower bed twice in five years at $150 a pop.

This time she used 2x4s - leftovers gifted from neighbor, a can of stain she had on hand, and 2xEDGE Staples instead.

46 feet of edging, installed with her son's help, and no extra costs beyond the staples.

She's already planning to redo two more areas the same way.
